8 Tips to help prevent over eating

Good morning! Thanksgiving is a time for enjoying delicious food, but it can be easy to overeat. Here are some tips to help you avoid that:

1. Eat Mindfully

  • Slow Down: Take your time to enjoy each bite. Eating slowly allows your body to signal when it's full, helping you avoid overeating.

  • Engage Your Senses: Pay attention to the flavors, textures, and aromas of the food. This makes the experience more satisfying without needing to overeat.

2. Balance Your Plate

  • Fill Half Your Plate with Vegetables: Include a variety of vegetables to ensure you're getting fiber and nutrients. Veggies are low in calories but high in volume, helping you feel full.

  • Portion Control: Choose smaller portions of higher-calorie foods like mashed potatoes, stuffing, and pie. It's okay to sample them, but balance your plate with lighter options like salad or roasted vegetables.

3. Don't Skip Meals Before Dinner

  • Stay Regular: Don’t skip breakfast or lunch to "save room" for dinner. Arriving at the table overly hungry can lead to overeating. Eat a light meal or snack to keep your hunger in check.

  • Snack Wisely: If you’re snacking before the big meal, choose something light and healthy, like nuts or veggies with dip.

4. Drink Water

  • Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day, especially before your meal. Sometimes thirst is mistaken for hunger, leading to overeating. It will also help you feel fuller during the meal.

  • Avoid Sugary Drinks: Choose water, herbal tea, or sparkling water instead of sugary beverages like soda or excessive alcohol, which can contribute to overeating.

5. Be Selective with Desserts

  • One Plate of Sweets: Instead of going back for multiple helpings, try to limit yourself to one serving of dessert. If you want a variety, ask for small portions of different treats.

  • Enjoy and Move On: Savor the dessert but try not to linger at the dessert table. Once you’ve had your portion, enjoy the conversation or go for a walk to avoid temptation.

6. Practice the 80% Rule

  • Eat Until You're 80% Full: Before you reach the point of feeling stuffed, try to stop when you're about 80% full. This can help you avoid the uncomfortable, overfull feeling later.

7. Stay Active

  • Take a Walk: A post-meal walk is a great way to aid digestion and burn some of those calories. It can also help reduce the temptation to return for seconds.

  • Involve the Family: Suggest a fun family activity, like a football game or a walk outside, to keep everyone moving and engaged without thinking about food.

8. Set a Positive Mindset

  • Focus on the Experience: Thanksgiving is about more than food—enjoy time with family, play games, share memories, and savor the moments.

  • Avoid Guilt: If you do overeat a bit, don't stress about it. Practice self-compassion, and make the next meal a healthy one.

By being mindful of your portions, balancing your meals, and incorporating some healthy habits, you can enjoy your Thanksgiving without overeating.
